The section I did was very moderate and I have heard that the AT is not. A lot of the through hiker I talked to had done the AT previously and they all seemed to say that they didn't do much more then ten to fifteen miles in a day. There is probably a book written on the trail that tells you where to camp, where good water is, where you can mail food and has maps and addresses. I would get something like that and use it to plan the hike. You can even cut out the section of the book specific to your trip to save on weight and take it with you throwing away parts of it as you go or mail sections of it with your food.

    Have fun!
I'm thinking of taking a month off next August to do the Washington state section of the PCT!

Hey thanks.  Yeah, I just read A Walk in the Woods and it seemed pretty treacherous.  Especially up in Maine (but those guys were like 100 pounds overweight and ill prepared).  I'm not sure which section I'll do, but there are plenty of trails here in Florida to practice.

Have fun on the Washington section of the PCT!

My hike went great, I did 470 miles in thirty days! I wish I would have had some lighter gear. I also should have called everywhere that I was mailing food to to make sure they were still open and that I had their addresses correct. I mailed a weeks worth of food and supplies to a bad address and had to spend a day hitching into Bend and back to the trail. Worked out anyway, if everything went right it would have been a boring trip and I did get to stop by a liquor store yay!
    Happy trails,

Hey DFM!  How's Bham treatin ya?  I'm hoping to do some of the AT next summer and I was wondering if I could ask you a question about your PCT hike.  You said you did 430 miles in 30 days.  Would you say this was over moderate terrain?  How experienced of a hiker are you?  I'm just trying to get a good idea of how far I could get from NC in two months with my rather out-of-shape ass.
Thanks for your input and happy trails to you!

Yay! Wait... I doubt it. Boo!
I am gonna hike the pacific crest trail through Oregon in august and I don't think I am going to be able to make that work out. I will get to see the Gene Ween solo show though. Yay!
